A Website Realignment: Day 56: Branding Berchman

in A Website Redesign, Thoughts, video

This post is the first in what may be many video posts (ie., vlog posts). I am exploring new content formats so this may appear to be a bit ‘raw’ and unrehearsed, but it is real. I’m not reading a script (although you do see me look off and pause—I’m looking at a whiteboard with notes).

So, how does this fit into the “Website Realignment” you may ask? Well at this stage I am assessing content and its function and role in the website:

  • What types of content do I use?
  • What content formats don’t I use?
  • Are certain types of content suited to a specific format? (Tutorials are always text?)
  • Should I have more than one type of content?
  • Am I making this not simple?

So here it is. The first video post. I plan on these becoming higher quality the more I do them. Would definitely welcome your comments on using this format in the comment form below.

Good first effort. Need to look at the audience more, work on eliminating "umms" etc., and, perhaps, get a shave so that you look professional.
  • Lee, thanks for the audience + 'umms' comments. As for the shave I'm
actually growing it out right now. But that can change in a moments
    notice.
    Really appreciate your feedback!

I've been following you for a while now (why does that sound stalker-ish?) because: a) I think you do really terrific work, and b) I find myself in a very similar position with rebranding/realigning my own business.

I like the video and the concept overall, because it gives us an opportunity to get to know you in a different, more personal, way. Given that, I'd agree with lee that you should look directly into the camera most of the time. Print out your whiteboard if you have to and tape the notes below the camera. (By the way, if you can do it without sounding fake writing a script has worked well for me in the online classes I teach.)
  • rcroll, thanks much for the feedback. Really appreciate you taking time and for coming out from the "stalker" role :-)

I think the video post works well, It gives people a chance to see who you are. I also think that you should display some of your nicknacks more prominently. I understand that you are a "professional" but you are also a fun loving guy with a great sense of humor. The video posts should be more conversational rather then scripted. I would recommend an outline but not a script.
  • Walker, thanks for taking time to comment. Conversational could be cool. I will consider that.
  • To be honest the unshaven image is sort of like a brand for you - like Seth Godin's shaved head. As I tell everyone (including my clients) just be yourself. Don't let people tell you anything differently. I had tons of people telling me to change my own "cartoon guy" image before I started my new business site, but the only thing I really changed was my logo and even then it still retains some of my own "cartoonish" personality.
  • Doug, thanks for the feedback. The comment about "just being yourself" rings true. I think authenticity is what people appreciate most.
