Making the grad(ient)

With the plethora of Web 2.0 design material that is abundantly available today it was actually refreshing to see a post showing how to do gradients properly.

This tutorial on 9rules network is decent. It does cover the issues of color saturation and places emphasis on the subtley and nuance of a properly done gradient. The only catch is that they show how to do it in Photoshop, so if you do not have Photoshop you are S.O.L.

In any event there are multiple ways to ‘skin a cat’ in Photoshop and I would prefer using a gradient mask to make my gradients. It allows for greater control and customization. But hey, that’s just me and my personal preference. To each his own.
