I am fortunate to receive frequent inquiries from people and businesses asking for help with their WordPress and/or Thesis website. One of everyones top question is “how much?”

  • “How much does a website cost?”
  • “How much does it cost to add this one feature to my Thesis template?”
  • “What do you charge by the hour?”

While these are all great questions, I cannot answer them without getting a little more information.

Why can’t I give an answer to the questions?

Because the questions are too generic and they lack specificity. The work I do is value based and requires asking questions to understand the scope of your project. I cannot tell you how much something will cost when I don’t fully understand what I am trying to estimate. And giving you a generic hourly rate will not determine how many hours anything will take, or help you estimate how much the overall project will cost.

If you were to ask a building contractor “how much does a house cost?” they would most likely have many questions for you:

  • How many rooms will you have?
  • How many square feet?
  • What types of materials do you want us to use?

The same is true for web projects. There are many parameters that need to be considered before I can give you a specific estimate:

  • New web site vs. a redesign
  • New or existing content
  • Web hosting
  • E-commerce
  • Blogging
  • Video
  • Email Newsletters
  • Online Forums
  • Wikis

Every project is different and has its own scope, and therefore its own unique set of costs, just like a house.

Is there a price range?

Yes, there are ranges I tend to see on projects over time. On average most basic new web sites (not redesigns) typically start at $3,000 and up—this includes design and programming for a basic website. On average most website redesigns start at $1,500 and up. This is not to say that every project I work on costs no less than $1,500-$3,000 dollars to start–completely not true.

I work on projects that cost less that involve a smaller scope. I also work on projects that cost much more with a much larger scope. With my experience and knowledge the value I provide clients at the level of services I provide, my estimates are very competitive.
